St. Stephen, also known as “Chocolate Town”, is the home of Ganong’s Chocolates and is the U.S. border town to sister city Calais, Maine. Tour the Ganong’s Chocolate Museum, shop for beverages and groceries, or step out for a bite. St. Stephen’s is the commercial centre of the area. For fresh produce and feather-light dinner rolls Troy’s Farm Stand on Highway No. 1 is a must stop!
St. Andrew’s-by-the-Sea is a National Historic Site. A charming, loyalist community of quaint white clapboard buildings, St. Andrew’s has a lively visual arts scene and a thriving main street filled with galleries and restaurants. Walk out to the wharf to see the “catch of the day”, book a whale-watching tour or a kayaking adventure. Brunch on Sunday at the Fairmont Algonquin, an historic wood-framed hotel, is a must.
On the road to St. Andrew’s stop at the Ste. Croix Island national historic site where French explorer Champlain established the first French settlement in North America, more than 400 years ago. Also, at low tide, drive across the ocean floor and visit Minister’s Island.
Children’s Activities: For a sweet treat for children of all ages visit the Ganong’s Chocolate Museum. In nearby St. Andrew’s the Huntsman Marine Aquarium offers a touch pool for children. Visit the Atlantic Salmon Centre’s aquarium, the Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Centre and the St. Andrews Creative Playground.
